Living Sacrifice - A Biblical Truth
As Christians, we're called to give ourselves to God as a "living sacrifice." The Apostle Paul helps us understand this truth in his letter to the believers in Rome:

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

Living Sacrifice - Dying to Self
So, how do we truly present ourselves to God as a living sacrifice? In a nutshell, we must die to our prior selves. This concept is wonderfully presented in this anonymous poem…

When you are forgotten, neglected, or purposely set at naught, and you don't sting or hurt with the oversight, but your heart is happy being counted worthy to suffer for Christ;

That is dying to self.

When your good is evil spoken of, when your wishes are crossed, your advice disregarded, your opinion ridiculed, and you refuse to let anger rise in your heart or even defend yourself, but take it all in patient, loving silence;

That is dying to self.

When you lovingly and patiently bear any disorder, any irregularity, any annoyance; when you can stand face to face with waste, folly, extravagance, spiritual insensibility, and endure it as Jesus did;

That is dying to self.

When you are content with any food, and offering, any raiment, any climate, any society, any solitude, any interruption by the will of God;

That is dying to self.

When you never care to refer to yourself in conversation or record your own good works or itch after commendation, when you can truly love to be unknown;

That is dying to self.

When you can see your brother prosper and have his needs met, and can honestly rejoice with him in spirit and feel no envy, nor question God, while your own needs are far greater and you are in desperate circumstances;

That is dying to self.

When you can receive correction and reproof from one of less stature than yourself and can humbly submit, inwardly as well as outwardly, finding no rebellion or resentment rising up within your heart;

That is dying to self.

Dying To Self

 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."
-Galatians 2:20

At First. A believer lives for God by doing four things. Firstly, you need to die to the Law (Gal. 2:19). The law shows you that you will never be accepted by God, that you are a sinner and always fall short of perfection and righteousness. The first thing you must do in order to live for God is to put an end to all self-righteous works and to put your faith in Jesus our Lord.

Secondly, you need to be crucified with Christ (2:20). How can we be crucified with Jesus who died 2000 years ago on the cross of Calvary already? When you believe in your heart that Jesus died on the cross for you, that He bore the punishment of your sin on Himself, God takes your faith and considers you as dying to self with Christ.

This is further confirmed through water baptism. Romans 6:3-4 says, "Or do you not know that as many of us were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?"

After water baptism, you must "reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord" (6:11). This means that on a daily basis, you have to be dying to self and let your sinful past be nailed with Jesus on the cross!

Thirdly, you need to allow Christ to live His life through your body (Gal. 2:20). God is in charge of your life. By faith you have been crucified with Christ. Hence, you are to live with Jesus.

The way you can do that is by dying to self, to allow Jesus to live through your body; to control and to be the "boss" of your life. Jesus is the true vine, and you are the branch. All your life you shall draw nourishment from Jesus (John 15:1-6).

Fourthly, you need to trust the grace of God (Gal. 2:21). The apostle Paul says, "I do not set aside the grace of God." To "set aside" means to make ineffective, nullify and to invalidate. The fact is that the grace of God is the supernatural strength from God that empowers you to do His will on this earth.

But you will cancel that power if you choose not to use it. There are many christians in this world that treats the grace of God as something unnecessary and rely on their own intelligence, talents and experience instead.

Dying to self is to humble yourself, knowing that without God I am nothing, and to live a life of total dependence and yielding to the Holy Spirit. For the Bible says that, "not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit" (Zechariah 4:6).
